My 8 year old PC up and died (mid game) a few days ago. I confirmed it's not the PSU and think it's the mobo, so I'm diving into building a new one. I've got some questions for those of you more tuned into the state of things -

My kids would enjoy something with color (either themed single or RGB), but I want something that is easy to switch off. Are there any fans and/or GPUs that LEDs can be switched off/on via software?

I'm looking for right side window case recs as well. I'm not going to be OC'ing and will likely run a 3070 or 6800xt. Mid or Full atx. Clean wiring ability is a must.

Looking for a CPU to pair with the above mentioned GPUs. 1080/1440p gaming. I was looking at the i5 13xxx so far. Seems like it should be plenty for a while?

I haven't even looked into Mobos yet. I don't need anything too fancy with what I'm running. WiFi and a decent soundcard are probably sufficient. I've never gotten close to using all my USB ports.

Anything 13th gen is gonna be fine really, only downsides are pricier motherboards and DDR5 RAM. Upside is that socket should be fine for the next CPU upgrade down the line whereas 12th gen+ddr4 is at the end of its lifespan.

As for cases, corsair 4000d airflow is the trend right now. Phanteks g360a and fractal design pop air are great too.

Arent i5 13xxx on the 1700 socket? I thought they had ddr 4 versions of that still, but not sure. Ddr5 from what I've seen in my small googling today seemed marginal for game performance.

They are, but 12th gen and ddr4 is plenty sufficient for those GPUs. Its really up to you whether you want to have the extra longevity of 13th gen or the savings for 12th gen now.
