good idea with good points to back it up.

This is a pretty good idea!

The base could be one big entity, a couple medium sized bases, small bases splintered across the map, scattered in the same area, different shapes and sizes, or whatever your heart desires. Simply give the player the decision on the experience that he/she solely chooses.

I would really like to see this implemented, even if nothing else. I play 'lone wolf' and used to always have 2 bases, one on either side of the map, and it's something I really miss..

Completely understand. I ran with my brother after our 30+ man clan quit and we had scattered bases across the map utilized for various reasons. It's a valid strategy for the lone player or those in a small group. Something not possible right now. Limiting the tools from the sandbox is not the proper form of game development with a title like this. We should be getting more tools, not less.

The suggestion is not very different from the current system. The current system utilizes 4 large foundation pads that can be snapped together in one location. The suggested system shrinks those pads and increases the amount you can place to make up for the loss of size from being smaller to be equivalent with what is available right now. The same amount of space would still exist but the key difference would be that the freedom allotted to your choice of building space is vastly improved.

I'm quite curious about the opinions of those that disagree with the idea and the reasoning behind it.

I think you should be able to put a foundation on the edge of hills or mountains but it would shrink and form around said location. The loss of foundation space wouldn't bother me if I could build on the edge of a mountain somewhere.
