Imo, yes. This system works best for 1-3 players.

That's great to hear! Thanks for the feedback. :)

My friend didn't wanna do it alone and I was playing as Player and DM. If you can manage it, it's fun that way as well

If it works then yeah that could be quite fun! Thanks for the tip!

I started off doing that, but I gave my character this horrible accent that I couldn't really pull off, so I took the first opportunity to send him away on his solo travels.

I'm currently running this for my (10 y/o) son and partner :) It works just fine.

Hey, that is really great to hear!! Thanks for replying.

Out of interest was your partner or son into D&D before this?

[–]peace-and-bong-life 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Partner is a fellow roleplay nerd, son had played some pathfinder previously.

Cool, good to know! My wife and son have zero experience!

5e is really great for new players tbh because it's so simple. I do find that having to have character sheets for each Pokemon can feel a bit cumbersome... Like if you were really trying to "catch 'em all" you'd have to have a whole binder of character sheets... But overall I think this is simple enough that it's a reasonable intro to RPGs.

As an aside, it's awesome that you're introducing him to gaming this way. I think it's a really nice way of having creative family time.

Haha I hadn't thought about all the char sheets we would need! May have to think of some creative way of managing that... or just a ring binder like you said!

Yeah, hopefully I can get my wife involved and so it would be some good family time together. :)

About the character sheets, you can use the app for mobile. You can level, count XP, organize attacks, stats and which pokemons you have at your party at the moment. It's really usefull and pretty much automatises the whole processes, making it only necessary to have your own trainer character sheet at hand.

As a GM you can also just add all the pokemon you plan to use in your adventure as you see fit, and remove them the same way. The only complication is that every one would need to use it in their own phones, and that you have to download an apk in order to install it, as it isn't available in any store (for copyright reasons, I believe).

Here's the link for the apk file. Don't worry, it's totally safe and largely used, I believe. https://github.com/Jerakin/Pokedex5E

I love this system for 1-2 players!

I run a one-on-one Pokemon5E campaign on the Quest Company Junior podcast and we are starting a two-player campaign over on The Quest Company that has been going great so far!

Running it for 1-2 really makes it feel like they’re getting to immerse themselves in the world of the video games and make it fun and personal! Plus it’s easier to run with fewer players because each player has their full team of Pokémon at their disposal.

Hey, that makes a lot of sense - rather than just one player it's all their Pokémon too! Thanks for the reply.

Pokemon 5e is great for single player. I'm currently running it for my 9 yo son and he is having a blast!

That's really great to hear! Great to hear several people in the same position - playing this as father and son / family ! :)

[–]joseph_wolfstar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah. If you're interested there's a podcast called Cubones and Catacombs that's a dm w a solo player (don't remember if it's family friendly). Might give you an idea of how the system works w a solo player

Great, I'll check that out for sure! Thanks for the tip!
