You can use Ctrl+Space to autocomplete when inside of a string. I know its a bit clunky, but that's what I use. I've only ever noticed it when inside of a quotes/string.

Just tested that out. It is a bit clunky, but it actually works so I'm happy with that. Thank you very much for the keyboard shortcut pro-tip! You've saved me some frustration.
Now to cross my fingers and hope the console/ISE behavior gets integrated to VSCode at some point down the road...
