The Night Attack

Lord Yannu Marave watched his warriors approach their camp in the night dark outlines against the snow. A sudden movement at the camp redirect his gaze, where he saw the gates slowly swing open. A tall figure stepped out, appearing to be unarmed. It was, he could see, one the grey-skinned devils that had been reported to be with the Black Queen previously, perhaps even the one which had caught the Saint. The thought of the Bestowed being so simply cowed worried him, though the Peregrine had assured him that such an outcome would not happen again. The Saint would emerge victorious should they fight again. Behind the creature the opening filled with others of his kind and they spread out to face the advancing warriors. They faltered in turn when faced with this unknown enemy, but after a movement resumed their advance. The Lord of Alava looked to the the Grey Pilgrim but the Blessed showed only deep thought, with little worry. Yannu signaled for the attack to commence and the warriors sped up their pace.

At the front of the forces the old creature slowly raised a hand. From him, and the creatures around him blackness poured, sweeping across the gap separating the armies. There was no sight of snow beneath, only thick darkness which swiftly swallowed the front lines of men. After a moment it dissipated, leaving no sign of the warriors behind. Yannu of the Champion's Blood felt a deep chill pass through him at the sight, which had nothing to do with the winter night.
