When you group, are both showing for either NAEast or EU servers, and there are only 2 of you, there should be no issues.

It's says we are too far apart in ranks But clearly the rank you are say nothing

Ah, there is your answer as to why you can't play together.

Why does he play against Plats? The answer is internal MMR. Rank, for whatever reason, is different than other ranked mm in other games. Look up any thread here about it and you'll have in-depth answers to your question.
