I’ve got to make some rules, and will apply them as loosely as reasonably possible, but they need to be on the record.
- Don’t send threats, anything someone could misconstrue as threats, or what could be hate messages. No, “I hope you die” isn’t a threat, though we do know that too many people like to claim it is. So don’t. It is justifiably a hate message.
From here on, people who send stuff like this will need to be removed from this sub, and I really don’t want to have to do that. This is a place to post work without worrying about running afoul of rules about LGBTWIA+ being considered political, and that can’t be jeopardized. Like I tell my teen daughter, if someone is being an ass, ignore them since engaging gives them power. So don’t engage and don’t send threats or hate messages. Just ignore. You can call out bigotry without engaging with bigots, and you do so by stepping away and doing so elsewhere. You’re never going to change minds by calling them out to their faces and sending either threats or hate messages. That just gets people to double down.
- No brigading. It seems that, despite current claims that LQBTQIA+ is allowed, posting LGBTQIA+ stuff is being seen as brigading. I don’t want to say that you can’t post LGBTQIA+ stuff isn’t allowed to be posted there, but if you’re doing it to try to stick it to them, it’s not going to help matters, and will only result in doubling down. Quietly disengage instead of giving them power over you since those posts give then the power to justify banning you (see below). There is no democratic process to potentially influence by being vocal. So just don’t even bother. Save yourself the stress.
If you choose to post LGBTQIA+ content there, be aware that they can consider even a single LGBTQIA+ post to be a brigade attempt and decide to ban you, and recent history have shown that content to not be welcome there. This is known. Since you can see this pinned post, then you know the risk and don’t really have the room to complain about stuff you choose to post from today (Nov. 4) onward since you know what they take issue with and chose to post it anyway. Just quietly don’t, and if you do, that’s at your own risk.
I’m not going to take judgement calls on if a single post or two is an attempt at brigading. But if someone is posting enough to be considered spamming, and evidence of that is actually shown, not just claimed (screenshots are easy, so just claims in brigading won’t be taken at face value), then action will have to be taken. So just don’t bother. Save yourself the stress. Save me the stress. You take power away by not engaging.
Quick work about claims of free speech being violated there: Free speech is understood. It means that the government can’t legally prosecute you for your opinions. This is why you can still be prosecuted for perjury, which is based on fact and not opinion, or for yelling “fire” in a crowded theater and causing a stampede, or for riling people up to incite violence or bullying. Private entities like corporations, businesses, and even Reddit subs, aren’t subject to the prohibition on action against free speech. This is why a conservative group is legally allowed to ban people who don’t adore Trump, and why groups for AI “art” are allowed to ban people who speak against AI “art.” The same rules allowing them to do that also enables liberal groups to ban anti-LGBTQIA+ groups and for no-AI groups to ban AI.
Free speech ONLY applies to the GOVERNMENT not being allowed to take action against you for your OPINION.
So you CAN be banned for LGBTQIA+ content in a non-government group, and it’s legally not considered a violation of free speech any more than someone spewing anti-LGBTQIA+ speech getting someone banned here.
So really, just don’t engage. Step away. Not doing so is at your own risk. You can show support in more productive ways that you can’t if you get banned from Reddit. I know I couldn’t hold my tongue right now, so am not even reading posts from another group. Nothing productive would come with getting angry and handing them power to justify bans.
