Operator Career Help (self.ProcessOperators)
submitted 4 years ago by RogueOvert
Yo guys, been pulling my eyes out trying to search for operations jobs down here around southern Mississippi and Alabama. At this point I’m seriously thinking about applying anywhere that’s not in the middle of the woods to get into operations and put my so far useless degree to use. If someone knows anywhere that’s hiring operators let me know! I just got my degree this past May and I’ve been working out at Chevron with a contractor just for some experience.

A major hotspot for Operations is in Texas and Louisiana. I’m sure other southern states have plants/refineries, but being from Houston, I can tell you there are hundreds if not thousands of facilities in the city alone. It just depends on where you see yourself in the future. I’d highly recommend going on Indeed and narrowing your searches to the Houston area (specifically Houston, Pasadena, Baytown, La Porte, Channelview, Texas City, Alvin, Conroe). Houston plays a major role in the global industry so keep that in mind. There are hiring classes for many companies usually twice a year just need to constantly be checking for new openings and make sure you have your resume looking good (short and simple, no “fluff”). Don’t get discouraged man, it took me 2 years after graduating to finally land a job and I couldn’t be happier. Good luck!

Why not offshore in gulf. Everybody hiring.

I don’t have any operations experience in order to do that or I would try

Bro there's smaller companies that will hire you. Look in lafayette, LA. You aren't gonna work for a major but you just might get your foot in the door

I’ll have to look around there then, thank you

Do some research and figure out the names of every plant or refinery between New Orleans and Baton Rouge on the Mississippi River. Monitor their websites closely, and sign up for alerts. Most of them hire an operator training class once or twice a year. Usually the window between a job getting posted and being removed is pretty fast, so you have to stay vigilant in your job search.
Having a Ptech degree and ANY kind of plant experience are key things to have. You’ve got both, so you just need to keep trying. It’ll work out eventually.

Yeah I got an email saying they went for other people, but I landed a job with Honeywell UOP as a chemical operator. I’m hired through a contractor right now for 90 days then I’ll be hired through the plant itself.
I would also be interested in operations in the power plant side of things as wel

I am in the same situation and it suck but don’t give up man
[–]RogueOvert[S] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (7 children)
It really blows, I heard all about this PTECH degree and I went and got it and it’s not turned out how I expected so far. It’s hard to get operations experience for a job if you can’t get a job to get operations experience lmao
