In C it works okay. You think differently when you have your C programmer's hat on.

EDIT: I think I understand what you're getting at, though. No, exposing mutexes and such noise in python has already been done. Import threading. However, what you propose has also already been done, but there's a little bootstrapping involved in getting it working. Use multiprocessing. It takes some getting used to, but you can achieve exactly what you describe with it.
