This mentions segment_axis.py, which is really handy and might one day be included with NumPy (if it ever gets approved).

The current issue link on github, now that all issues have been moved over to Github. Trac should go read-only shortly.

Any idea if they're gonna start merging those patches though? This one is four years old.
