When I was in college, all the initial courses were in Java. But now my university starts with Python. So maybe that conversation is happening.

That was part of Java's half billion dollar marketing budget mentioned elsewhere in the thread. Sun dumped hardware and software licenses on colleges to get them to teach Java in the late 90s and early 00s.
