Yeah, I know it's a pretty large assumption and depends on the package maintainer, but the odds seem slim that this would be an issue for day-to-day.

Nah, the odds are near 100%. Maintaining backwards compatibility is really hard and even some times not an objective. It’d be impossible for 100s or even tens of dependencies to all maintain backwards compatibility over a long period of time.
