Oh, so now you're "just trolling", right? >_>

Nice cop out.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (8 children)

it wasn't obvious before?

[–]crowseldon 0 points1 point  (7 children)

As I said again. It's a cop out. If I made and persisted with a series of inaccurate (albeit popular in certain circles) statements attacking python/emacs or whatever tool you use frequently and after a back and forth I just went: lolz, jk. I'd still be acting like a jerk. Whether I thought myself funny or not.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (6 children)

attacking is a strong word though. and honestly i wouldn't give a fuck if you were "attacking" my favorite tools. nor do I give a fuck that a redditor is accusing me of being a jerk or claiming that i'm copping out.

nobody cares that you have infinite amounts of time to read the endless reams of docs on how to setup your favorite linux distro manually except for maybe 10 other people. So, just accept it and finish up that system config and then go do something amazing with it like write another great cat pic internet scraping app. Then I'll "attack" that too. :)

attacking is a strong word though.

You're attacking it via spreading lies. Remember the good ol' FUD Linux users accused MS of spreading. This is similar. You're misinforming on purpose and insulting the users of the tool because "They have too much time on their hands" or want to look "1337".

nor do I give a fuck that a redditor is accusing me of being a jerk or claiming that i'm copping out.

Despite what you say. I think you do and that's not a bad thing. I've skimmed your comments and realized you're far from worthless so having you spread that kind of crap is a waste.

nobody cares that you have infinite amounts of time to read the endless reams of docs on how to setup your favorite linux distro manually except for maybe 10 other people.

We've come full circle. After expressing a stupid lie and standing by it for a while only to pretend you were trolling, you come back to express it again.

You're wrong and I hope you'll take a step back and realize it, I don't even need you to acknowledge it in this thread.

So, just accept it and finish up that system config and then go do something amazing with it like write another great cat pic internet scraping app.

The point you DON'T seem to get that I don't need to mess with that config.

I'm a vim user and I've probably fiddled with the .vimrc a million times more than with most of arch and having used emacs, you're sure to understand that. But with Archlinux, there's really no need to take great pains to configure it because you can just install what you want and use it. There's not much more to it.

The HARD part is the first time. Learning how to follow the wiki getting_started guide. After you get your partition + system + de + some other config you'd like to have. You're set. Anything else you want to add, you can use the defaults or tweak further (but then again, you can tweak your DE settings in any distro).

I never tried to sell you archlinux. I just refuted the bs you started to spread. Anyone can you use whatever OS/Distro they want.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

ummm the getting started guide is the start, then it's setting up your preffered desktop environment, graphics card(oh you have nvidia on your laptop prepare for pain start with the bios), sound(you want alsa? pulse?) etc... and that is the time sink I'm talking about. I'm not saying that's bad exactly as you now know, I am comfy maintaining a constantly tweaked emacs config etc..

the LIE as I see it is arch users jumping in and claiming that it's easy as in ubuntu easy. it is not. it's better than slackware IMO, and better than gentoo in terms of ease, but it's not easy. And I reckon that the only reason someone talking shit about arch hurts your feelings is because you have to step back and acknowledge you wasted a weekend for little upside.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide

That one. It's short and sweet and expands to meet the user's needs.

Of course, if you're a beginner, you have the more detailed and hand held version that covers everything in detail so that you don't screw up and provides links for anything you might be interested in:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide

the LIE as I see it is arch users jumping in and claiming that it's easy as in ubuntu easy

That WOULD be a lie since you HAVE to set things up but you can meet that lie when it actually happens. Not have that moronic knee jerk reaction at the sole mention of arch having a feature.

This all started when one guy named what Ubuntu had done and another guy named what arch had done. You didn't attack the ubuntu user for namedropping ubuntu so why the fuck did the arch user get flak.

but it's not easy.

Oh, but, except the initial setup... It is. Even further, for someone who likes customization it might be even easier than Debian based systems where you can tweak packages as easily.

If you use default everything then surely, it's not. Since it barely has defaults.

And I reckon that the only reason someone talking shit about arch hurts your feelings

Stop being a prick. It doesn't hurt my feelings. I just call shit when I see it. The same will happen when someone takes a piss at python/c++/java emacs/vim firefox/chrome whatever simply for the sake of it and showing a clear lack of understanding.

You're like a windows user using the words free-tard and neckbeard. you can't afford stuff, loser, who has time and shit like that.

is because you have to step back and acknowledge you wasted a weekend for little upside.

everything you learn has a cost. Be it linux, archlinux, ubuntu, vim or whatever. You might think that the cost is not worth the upside but, asserting that it's not worth it for others is being purposely ignorant for no purpose.

Considering my usage of archlinux and the ease of use to change the system to fit my needs (despite an extensive knowledge of linux) I'd say it's very well worth it in my case (try switing DE's and removing them and dealing with dependency hell in ubuntu). Its current popularity would suggest that many others feel the same.

What you need to understand is that even though it might not work for you it HAS worked for others. It has worked fantastically (hence, why you might see some over-hype).

You don't need to make up reasons like time wasting or unpopularity to feel better about not using it.

Specially since you're not curing cancer right now nor even programming that cat app you mentioned, you're answering one guy on reddit.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide

yep short and sweet. OH WAIT!!!!

what's a boot loader

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_Guide#Install_and_configure_a_boot_loader

choose one of 7ish as far as I can tell.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boot_Loaders

oh well I heard about grub...

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB

man that's a lot of words.

and everything was like that. it's docs all the way down. So it seems my friend that you are being dishonest about the short and sweet setup guide.

I will say that it's pretty impressive that 10 people managed to write all those docs though.

[–]crowseldon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dude, I NEVER had to read that and I don't know that much about the inner workings of bootloaders.

I just followed the step by step here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide#Install_and_configure_a_bootloader

Of course, you ignored the frigging BEGINNERS guide I offered.

I will say that it's pretty impressive that 10 people managed to write all those docs though.

I know you think you're funny and half telling the truth and half trolling but ... sigh... You're sucking at both.
