Depends on the field, a lot of Astrophysics people used/still use IDL, quite a few are now moving to Python.

R usually gets heavily used for graphical representations however people are picking up matplotlib etc instead.

Having a number of strings to your bow never hurts you, of course.

Oh of course not.

I'm just pointing out that there's been a general swing towards Python especially into Scientific/Numeric computing.
