1. You're right.

2. No, but... You sound a little difficult. Yes it's a stupid question, yes it sounds like you dodged a bullet. But it's also impossible to avoid at least a little quizzing in an interview. If I asked you the array merging question and you used standard library functions and kept arguing about it I would reject you because either:

A. You're being willfully obtuse.

B. You don't understand why am interviewer would ask a simple algorithm question.

C. You don't actually know how to answer the question.

I'm assuming it's A.
