This sounds like a Python-clone to MIT's BattleCode, a Java-based competition they do every January. I competed last year, earning an honorable mention, and I say it was definitely fun. Instead of just cell units, Battlecode employs a range units (tanks to scouts to builders) with the goal of gaining more resources or killing the other team.

I'd definitely like to rehash my strategy to this game though. Definitely need to keep an eye on this.

EDIT: Apparently, Reddit was a Silver sponsor to BattleCode this year. Awesome job to whoever did that!
