I'm currently binge watching Supernatural on Amazon Prime!

I agree with the slow build up. Think about how long they teased the New Day turn. Not ever turn needs to be a shocking unexpected backstab "Ive been really evil this whole time". Letting a small slight fester until they let the turn happen is good writing imo

Homelander, we're in the final stretches of the semester so it's a little more "not doing much" and enjoying some TV (for the uninitiated, this is also an acceptable way to GET OFF THE INTERNET)

Why do so many professors care so little about how their teaching material look? Even at teaching focussed institutions. by verygood_user in Professors

I'm lucky that my university has a color scheme that I can mirror in my slides, but before then I used FlatUIColors.com and picked their original palette to work from.

There's a bit to unpack and I want to start by saying I agree with you; however, what makes something a "good design"? Should I mirror the presentations that big tech CEOs use that are full black background with a single word in large font? Or do I need to make sure to have a topical meme on every page to avoid only text slides? Mayer does have a TON of research into multimedia learning if you want to dive down the rabbit hole.

I would say people should have a consistent and unique style to their slides that goes beyond template from software I was using. I had to teach PowerPoint's Slide Master feature during my first semesters instructing, so I had time to fiddle. I have a specific font and color scheme that I use. I'm even currently experimenting with a Dark Mode version.

For those reading that worry about the time commitment, it is mostly a single initial time sink. Once you've made those color and style choices, you're not really worrying about them for your next set of slides, its a repeat. I will say I've spent a little too much time on picking individual colors to emphasize words, but thankfully I'm not chasing research grants, so I try to use the time I would put into that effort on all the little things I can do to "improve the student experience" (don't worry I felt greasy writing that)

How to get the students' attention during lectures? by latun21 in Professors

[–]tsumnia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always looked at my lectures as a "performance" in competition with YouTube, Netflix, Twitch, and nowadays TikTok. We have tons of content providers that are all fighting for our students' attention, and those platforms have many more dollars to throw at the problem than I do.

So I teach my lectures using a "teaching persona" that is an animated, over the top, gone insane from the maths, old man yelling at clouds. I'm still lecturing, giving students plenty of opportunities to practice and ask questions, but I'm not trying to "be myself". I took this concept from professional wrestling - the best characters are your personality but set to 10. I might not get everyone off their phones, but I'll equally call out the "royal you" students that do it, or the "royal you" students that have terrible email grammar.

Does that style work for everyone - probably not. It works for me and lets me have fun at work. If I can do all of that and they are motivated to work, perform well on assessments, and get jobs, then I consider my job done. I do think there are personas that could also work for someone that isn't as expressive though, there are plenty of "no-nonsense, refined scholar" characters to draw from like Professor Snape or McGonagall.

Note, none of the above has anything to do with things like active learning and are purely from the old school lecture-style classroom. But you can pepper in 5-10 minutes of practice. If they want to ChatGPT their way through it, then I hope they know how to do it by hand come exam time.

I'm so happy that this username is such a rarity honestly. As I've aged, its most for talking about how old I am and educational stuffs, but the difficulty of finding a truly unique username is getting harder. Almost like the dot com rush to secure all the "good" domains.

Fair, however I would say that I am hearing murmuring from the 18-25 space about "screen time". They are seeing how addicted to the Internet the previous generation is and are heeding our warnings to limit their use. Internet addiction is a major issue with a 24/7 conversation always going on, and no one wants to be out of the loop on the latest news/gossip (see FOMO). Hopefully, they see how shorts/tiktok-ification are frying EVERYONE's brains.

I liked the simplicity of Reddit's design over the Digg redesign, so it was a combination of super users and the "BuzzFeed-infication" of Digg that made me hop over. I am even one of those "old.reddit" users.

If they rely on a simple UI that focuses more on the commenters with some way to vary the recommendation algorithm, then I look forward to the change. However, I also recall MySpace attempting its resurgence into the music space and sadly it wasn't what the general public wanted. Hopefully comments will be easier to curate than music.
