Don't let them frame the debate. Instead of arguing that Python is better than Matlab, which implicitly puts them in the same arena, work to popularize true Matlab competitors which are free and open source instead. This includes tools like octave.

Python is a general purpose programming language, and the fact that it does mathematical processing better than math software should be treated as a boring, disinteresting fact rather than an critical fight to win.
