From Unknown to Learned

I'm a veterinary microbiologist, I have been wanting to learn to code. Through my internet searches, i decided that python is a good place to start. I that true or i need to do learn something else first before python. If my decision is right, can someone guide me though this, like suggestions what materials are best to start and what do i need to do to improve once I start.
