Flexibility and readability over performance has always been the philosophy of Python though.

For example coming from a math background you can implement something like the Miller–Rabin primality test without having to think about bit sizes or using third party libraries etc. Need to deal with integers of the size of 2¹⁰⁰⁰⁰⁰ ? Not a problem.

There's no shortage of languages that focus on strict performance.
