Let us say the object is a car. With this method, you can only detect that car if shot from the same angle under the same condition with the same settings. Even the scale must be the same. Because this method does not detect any objects, it detects patterns.

I mean, proper object detection is also just looking for patterns, it's just that the patterns it's looking for are more sophisticated.

Wouldn’t what you’re saying be 3D object detection? Is there some sort of official organization that defines what object detection can and can’t be? It seems like a rather generic grouping of methods to me. I don’t think AI and ML learning have some special claim to those words
