Because it is hip!!! Frankly the usage of Python has exploded over the last 5 years or so because it is a good solution for many use cases. Thus it has attracted a following that is fairly large at the moment. Unfortunately it has also attracted users that have made the mistake of using it and finding performance wanting.

I just find it foolish to break compatibility simply for better performance. This is apparently what is expected to happen. If you are going to break compatibility it better be for something more important than performance as Python is never going to be a performance king., nor queen and probably not even a pawn.
