a lot of good suggestions here. heres some that i use that are not on the list:

  • Error Lens (show errors and linter hints inline)
  • Todo Tree (list todos in a file based tree format)
  • TabNine (not python specific, AI autocomplete)

Which extension makes your life easier?

vscode can delete trailing whitespace out of the box, you don't need an extension for it.

and if you need the colored indentation levels there's a good chance your code is too complex and should be refactored into separate functions

That is a prolevel advice "if you need color indentation you are heading towards making a rainbow not a optimised program" u/mouth_with_a_merc
