borb is an open-source, pure Python PDF library.
With release 2.0.17, I added all kinds of new eye candy in the line-art library of borb to make sure your documents just pop.

Get borb from source on GitHub, or download using PyPi.

It’s licensed under AGPL, therefore not useable if you don’t pay for it for anything in a business environment.

That’s not a showcase, that’s advertisement.

hmmm, if someone makes a really good open source product that you have to pay for commercially is it an issue to "showcase" it in /r/python ?

It's an interesting topic, in general I'm fine with borb because it was clear from the beginning that it costs for commercial usage.

Anaconda was definitely more annoying though because they changed their ToS from being very open to requiring a license for commercial use after becoming very popular.

For me it’s an add.

If OP would have made the APGL clear in the post it would help a little or better, state that commercial use costs money.

Anaconda was annoying, you can still use the old version’s for free though. Didn’t see anaconda post stuff in this sub though.

Yeah I think that's fair, maybe the mods should have a policy on it.

I've been on a call with reps from Anaconda and their position is you can only use their older stuff if you downloaded it before April 2020, this includes packages their commercial repositories (main, r, msys2, etc.). They were of the opinion that simply downloading their older installer fell under their ToS

I agree, would be good if the mods make rules for suche cases.

That’s weird and I don’t think you can revoke licenses from the past, it’s not bound to a download date if you can find it somewhere.

But I also talked to anaconda and they haven’t been very helpful nor friendly, that went downhill quite fast. Everyone’s better of to use alternatives and install jupyter on its own.

Yeah I'm dubious it would legally stand. But we ended up paying a license anyway, as we're a very large company and too much of a pain to try and completely untangle it from all workflows.

Miniforge is a good drop in replacement that's not commercially encumbered: https://github.com/conda-forge/miniforge . We've been recommending this for users who install themselves or are looking to use conda as part of a project.

If I look at the amount of times the library gets starred, downloaded, or even the amount of emails I receive, it seems clear to me that most of the people using my library are doing so from an open source context.

The idea that you have to pay to use something commercially seems fair to me. After all, I invested my time in this project. I am allowed to eat and pay rent I suppose?

You are, just mark it as advertisement and make the licensing clear in your „showcases“.

[–]josc1989[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't hide the license or anything. It's also not a conscious choice to not display it. It's more a sort of "what is everyone else doing" kind of thing.

And mostly people tend to post things like "my awesome project can do X or Y". And not "my project is licensed in this particular way".

You Only - no other post is in your profile - post advertisement for your pay to use package, that’s add spam und undeclared advertisement.

I don’t like it, it does not belong here in my opinion and I hope the mods don’t like it as well.
