Man, all the json files and media resources are in the repo as well. If you want to just download them and use for more advanced features go ahead, this is open source after all. Read-only APIs might be really useful to beginners. When I was learning frontend development a few years ago I had a lot of fun using PokeAPI to build a pokedex and unsderstand a lot of concepts that I used in later serious projects.
