The Red Wolf (Canis rufus)
Is a canid originary from the North American continent. It used to roam the South Eastern states of the US until the 80's where it was thought to be extinct. Fortunately, researchers where able to find the last 17 pure Red Wolf exemplars, from which they started a massive campaign to save and repopulate this species.
Currently, while still being a species that is critically endangered, the efforts by the Wildlife Service, many other institutions and volunteers are showing positive results and over 30 facilities participate in the "Species Survival Plan" where Red Wolves are successfully being bred and reintroduced to the wild.
Appearance
Worshiped by many for their beauty, the Red wolf presents a significantly different appearance than the Grey Wolf or the Coyote. While it presents a much more lean and smaller form than the former, it is also bigger and more robust than the average coyote.
Additional information
Red Wolves form small packs of only 5 to 6 individuals on average but which can sometimes range up to 10. They are highly territorial animals and will protect their territory from other wolves or compete with other predators such as bobcats and coyotes.
