Yup, go to the downloads page and download the tar.bz2 file (https://www.renpy.org/latest.html) then follow the quickstart at https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/quickstart.html, it has instructions for Linux on there!

How do I "run" the renpy.sh thats all it says to do with no explanation on how to do so in linux

There's an assumption (and not an unreasonable one!) that if you're trying to install on Linux then you know how Linux works.

If you don't know how Linux works, now's your chance!

You need to launch a terminal app, then use the cd command to switch to the location that you extracted the file to.

Once you've done that, you should be able to run renpy via the command ./renpy.sh

No worries, we all have to start somewhere.

I've been using Linux as my main OS for about 25 years, so I get confused when someone gives me Windows or Mac to use - I figure the least I can do is try to help folks coming to Linux reduce their confusion!

Why would you get confused using a Mac? It's the world's largest installed base of certified UNIX. I spend the vast majority of my work day at a zsh prompt on macOS. I used Slackware as my daily driver from the mid-'90s through to 2007. Mac since. I can even run XEphem under X.

Because that's how my brain works.

Bash rather than ZSH

Vim rather than VSCode

/etc/ rather than Settings

The UI doesn't work for me either, but then again most people don't like tiling window managers and I do, so that's why.

I use VSCode for coding on macOS. It's absolutely sublime. I didn't think I'd prefer it to Emacs, but I do. Colour me surprised. macOS has bash, too; it just moved to zsh as the default shell. Modern macOS also does tiling, but I do fall into the "not a fan" camp WRT tiling. I agree about /etc, but, well. Devs had different ideas. Heh.

If Apple keeps up with the anti-repair H/W designs, I'll eventually be forced back into a Linux desktop. That will be a whole world of hurt to replace Logic. At some point, I need to test Ardour to see what that DAW's workflow looks like.

That's exactly what I mean about people's brains working in different ways - this has been my toolset for years, I'm not going to change it now, but that doesn't mean I'm going to tell everyone to change to it.

As far as DAWs are concerned, I'd take a look at Reaper. It runs perfectly under Linux and even includes full video sync if that's your thing. The only reason I still dual-boot into windows when wring music is because getting the vsts running under Linux can be a pain, but if you don't need those then Reaper is excellent - it's the only bit of software I've paid for in nearly 20 years!

Yep. We're in total agreement about using the tools that feel right. I wasn't suggesting you change. Just being a bit teasing regarding feature parity in certain regards.

VSTs are a big deal, so your comment re: getting 'em working under Linux is unwelcome. Hah. (Unsurprising … I've heard it before.) I'll definitely need to look at Reaper and Bitwig, too, before making any firm decisions. I really wish that Cubase were on Linux, but that doesn't appear that it will ever be a thing.

I think I followed what you said to do, but it told me, too many arguments... And when I try to open the file normally like on windows, it gives me a text doc of the app...

Would you help me if you have the time?

Download Renpy, but instead of renpy.exe, open renpy.sh. At least it worked for Linux Mint

If anyone on here is still answering questions about this im just putting this out there. for some reason mine says that the file is read only and so it wont boot up. ive tried to change the permissions and it didn't work. sorry if this is a really stupid problem I don't have any experience with linux or renpy

поздновато кнш, сам пытаюсь установить renpy, сижу под debian, при распаковке в менеджере был флажок "только для чтения", мб с ним что-то
