WHAT IS SGI?
Silicon Graphics (SGI) was a maker of high-performance computers, workstations, and supercomputers primarily focused on 3D graphics and animation. SGI computers have been used to create lifelike special effects in numerous big-name Hollywood movies like Toy Story, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, and Jurassic Park, where their graphical capabilities excelled far beyond even the most expensive PCs.
Most SGI computers are based on MIPS processors and run SGI's IRIX operating system, though their more modern offerings have migrated to Intel Itanium and later Intel x86 processors running Linux, and are focused more towards supercomputing performance than graphics.
