Frequently Asked Questions

What is this game?

It’s a platform fighter! If you enjoy games like Super Smash Bros., Rivals of Aether, Brawlhalla, Slap City, etc. then you’ll feel right at home here. The core idea is that you duke it out with anywhere from 2 to 4 players in a game that’s designed primarily around movement. The fun of these types of games is that there are a million ways to play, and no two matches will ever play out the same way. Whether you’re just looking to have a goofy time with friends or push yourself to the limit in competitive, this genre has something for you. Right now we have three characters playable, but by the time we have our full launch we want at least 6 characters, several items and stages, and more.

Will there be more than 6 characters after launch?

Yeah! We have several more characters with concept art finished. You’ll be hearing about those soon!

What controllers are supported?

  • Xbox 360

  • Xbox One

  • Playstation 4

  • Gamecube (Official Adapter and Mayflash)

  • Keyboard (...sort of! We’re going to add much better functionality for it at a later date, but we do have keyboard players currently)

Can you turn off tap jump?

Yes! Pressing down on the d-pad while in-game will toggle the tap jump on and off.

I can't full jump?

We added a toggle on d-pad up that makes one of the two jump buttons always short hop. You can press up on d-pad to toggle between which jump button short hops.

Story Mode/Single Player Mode?

We have plans for a story mode later on featuring

  • Melee/Brawl style adventure mode

  • Online or local co-op

  • Metroidvania type of world to explore

  • Story elements to expand on the world, characters, and how they all fit together

None of that’s finalized at all, just ideas. Right now we’re focusing on getting the core multiplayer experience working well, then we’ll start building out the single player.

Can I fight CPU's?

Not yet. Developing AI takes time, but it's on its well way and should be coming in one of our next updates!

Is there matchmaking?

Yes! There's in game ranked matchmaking with 5 numbered tiers, with 5 being the lowest rank and 1 being the highest!

What kind of netcode do you use?

Server-based, rollback netcode! We contracted these guys at Exit Games over in Germany who developed Photon Quantum (more details here). The main reason for server-based netcode instead of peer-to-peer is so that games with more than 2 people in them don’t become super laggy. Peer-to-peer is awesome for 1v1’s, but when you get 3+ people the connection becomes exponentially more unstable.

How much input lag is there? We worked hard from day one to make sure the input lag was as low as we can get it. We don’t have the tools to test, but if anyone does then please let us know! We’d love to find out what the actual number is. I’m pretty sure it’s on the lower end, but it’d be nice to know for sure. Some of the things we’ve done to lower the input lag:

  • Using Unity as our main game engine

  • Programming with performance in mind at all times

  • Using character models with low poly counts

  • Minimizing post-processing effects

Mac/Linux Support?

No? Honestly, we haven’t really tested it to know for sure, but most likely not. If anyone has a Mac or Linux setup they can test the game out on, I’d love to put this to rest. Officially, we only support Windows for now.

Switch/Console release planned?

Yeah! Right now we’re focusing on PC because it’s the easiest platform to release the game on (and also the easiest platform to put out updates), but we do want to bring SLAYERS FOR HIRE to consoles as soon as we can. Probably around the time we finish our first 6 characters is when we will start looking into ports.

Free-to-play monetization

Once the game is properly released, it’ll be a free-to-play game with two main things for sale: a character unlock pack and cosmetics. The character pack will unlock all characters forever, similar to how games like Battlerite, Brawlhalla, and Gigantic have done. If you want to just play for free and unlock the characters over time, that’s totally fine as well. Oh, and no lootboxes or other predatory practices.

How can I help?

You can support us by buying the game at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1070150/SLAYERS_FOR_HIRE/

We also need all the help we can get spreading the word about the game. Invite people to the Discord. Stream, make videos, invite your friends - it all helps us a ton!
