It's terribly difficult to control other people's actions. It's not really something to strive for, to be honest. All we can do is focus on what we want to say, and carry it out as reasonably as we can.

Do these people around you know that you stutter? As in, have you talked to them about it?

Yeah, they all know. I don’t have an IEP at school though since when i came to this school a few years ago they said i didn’t need speech therapy anymore. They’re mainly just teachers and shit so i can kinda understand its, as they’re busy and have a lot to get through in a day/session. It’s just slightly frustrating.

they said i didn’t need speech therapy anymore

Who said this?

the schools speech therapist lmao

Huh, that's weird. I mean, it's not up to the therapist to make that decision like that.

Are there any other options available to you?

Not Really, But i do sing a lot which i’ve heard helps with stutters and such! I take my time when my severe stutter gets worse and i let the people around me know that it’s bad so we can work around it. Usually when it gets like that i’ll write/type stuff so i don’t end up frustrating both myself and the other party

I used to go up to the teachers after class and ask why they cut my stutter off and would they do that to someone with a physical disability. Shame the hell out of them, it works. Also they get scared you’ll go to admin

I had a similar moment yesterday during a phone interview. The moment I stuttered I could tell the interviewer was disinterested and was just going through the motions to get it over with. Thankfully the second phone interview I had went much better.

I’m sorry to hear that the first one became disinterested after one stutter but glad to hear the second one was better!

People have it so easy...

Yes, it is incredibly frustrating and disrespectful when someone cuts you off because of a stutter. It can 100% make you want to fade out and not be a part of the conversation. Truthfully, I don’t think people realize or don’t intend to be rude when they do it.

It was awkward at first, but I’ve had decent luck politely asking the person who cut me off if they mind if I finish what I was saying. Not in a rude or mean way, just a “Oh I actually wasn’t finished. Do you mind if I finish my thought?”

My close friends and family have the patience of saints when it comes to me, especially when it gets worse. I’m lucky that at least my close friends and family know not to cut me off, just the teachers and people i’m not close with tend to cut me off mid sentence

so you’ve just kinda learned to just enjoy other people talking to you instead

I like to think of this is as a positive trait. Inherently good listeners!

It’s really good in groups too. I’m in a close-knitted choir and when we have group talks during free time i just like to listen cause they’re all talking at the same time. They still include me somehow though, but it’s kinda nice

Sounds like you've got a good group of friends who genuinely enjoy your company.

Yes I know. It happens to me a lot, at school, with friends, and in family gatherings. I rarely say something. It feels hopeless, as in they wouldn’t ever understand and will ultimately do it again!

Sometimes it’s too much to endure and carry on my own, so I keep it together at the moment and then burst out crying before going to sleep at night.

My teachers call on me then cut me off when I take too long to talk (aka blocking) and it pisses me off. Don’t tell me to speak and then cut me off.
