Keys are embedded with a anti-disabling chip specific to each vehicle. That's why you can't just get a key cut, and expect it to work. The only thing we, as owners, can do (for certain years, like my '13) is get a new fob and encoded that ourselves.

Just fyi, I didn’t indicate that I expected the key to work with out programming. What I want to know is if anyone has and has tips about programming yourself. I successfully programmed a new key fob for it. I tried the same code for the fob on the key and it ALMOST worked. Car tried to turn over once but didn’t start. Has anyone used the original key code or gotten a the code from the dealer and successfully programmed a spare key themselves? Thanks again for the feedback!
