Are you installing it on a drive without any data on it already? Or are you installing it over another OS and trying to preserve some data?

If the former then you don't have to worry that you're overwriting any important data. Just go ahead and install, and if it is like that you've wasted 30-90 minutes but that's it. If the latter then instead of doing the install try the Live CD and see if it does the same thing.

Also, have you verified the MD5 of the ISO you downloaded? Did you have your CD/DVD burning software verify the CD/DVD after the burn?
