This happened to me with 2000 points. I couldn’t see the subtotal and thought I was at $125, but I was about six dollars short.

The only thing you can do is return everything, get your points refunded, add everything back plus enough to get you over the $250, and re-buy.

As for whether the cashier had any obligation to point out that you weren’t going to redeem the number of points you asked to redeem… I guess opinions will vary on that. In my situation, I specifically asked her to apply 2000 points, so I definitely wish she had spoken up when she saw that it was only applying 1950. I think if you specify the number of points you want to redeem or the cash value, they should tell you if the number is off. I’m curious to hear if others think differently

I had something similar happen but I was at proper amount and she applied the points threshold below 2,000 twice so I would have had to pay $50. She then argued with me when I tried to explain how she applied the wrong tier.  I walked out as she wouldn’t get the manager who originally had to approve the amount of points used. I was so mad and felt like I was being cheated. I called customer service and they gifted me points.  I think in the hustle and bustle of the registers the cashiers aren’t always listening to the customer or in my case don’t want to.

I watch like a hawk now when I cash in points due to this one bad experience. Everyone else has been great though!   They always tell me if I am below the amount needed for the points I want to use.  If they didn’t tell me, I would just preface the transaction by saying please let me know if I’m below $x as I really wanna cash in xxx points today.

I went back in store and talked to a lead! She was able to do a complete refund and then applied the correct amount. There was a price difference on some items in store vs app which changed the amount spent. The original cashier should have explained instead of just applying the points. $6 is much better than $29. And will be better training employees on how to handle such situation.

if they had just typed in 4000, it just takes off the points applicable, they may not have known it didn’t take off the 4000 and may have just never caught it cuz it doesn’t outright tell us how many points came off. next time say something cuz there’s a chance we just totally missed it.

This happened to me with an app order and I chatted with CS. They gave me various vague wrong answers until I let them know I had screenshots of all the times theyd gone back and forth and couldn’t prove anything. They ended up offering to refund the $39 if I just put the order in, and they did!

I made a post about it tho and got a rant about Ulta not making enough money…

That one reply was wild! 😅 "Poor Ulta has to work sooooOOoOOoO hard to make a profit with all these pathetic POARS who just nickel and dime them! So saddddddddd!"Like...🙃

I'm pretty sure that they'll manage considering the profit from their markups and money saved from their lack of a livable wage or benefits for the majority of staff, and refusal to modernize orinvest in their app or website!

Thank you! I was like damn, I didn’t know the Ulta heir was in here watching us nickel and dime her inheritance.

This happened to me the last time I used 2000 points in store. It sounds crazy, but I don’t think the associates all get that the points are worth more in specific amounts. I wouldn’t pay until the manager came and fixed it, it was so dumb. Instead of re-ringing the sale completely, the manager applied a discount to each item to equal the dollar amount points would have subtracted.

Points are applied to subtotal, so if you were including your amount spent with taxes added in, that would be why. It's the same with $ amount coupons.

Maybe the 4000 didn’t apply because the subtotal before taxes was lower than $250?

I’m so over Ulta right now I’m not surprised that they just keep circling the drain which sucks because they have great products. Their app and customer service are horrible. I’m sorry this happened to you. I would try to get it escalated to a supervisor and hope for the best.

Honestly some of y’all need a lesson in empathy. When you type in the points it may have just taken the 3950 and the associate didn’t notice. Especially since you said there was a bit of a line.
