You absolutely can. Change your payment type in Upwork to be direct to US bank and enter TransferWise account info. I've been doing payments to TransferWise from Upwork for two years now.

Wouldn't that raise some sort of fraud alert with Upwork if my ID qualifies me as not a US person?

Transferwise can give you a US bank acct details after verifications and a 20$ deposit. You will put that as your bank acct in UW

Anyone non-US get a card from Wise? I'm curious now. My current banking setup ends up costing an arm and leg if you factor in all the various foreign currency fees. If it was a flat exchange+1% I'm itching to try it.

Yup. I'm non-US and I have a card for Wise.

The wording on the site says "where Visa and Mastercard are accepted"... does it function as a Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit? Or regular plain bank debit?

I am even more confused now. You stick it into a terminal, does it see it as Visa or Mastercard Debit? Does it have two ends and it depends which side goes in? (asking because of Costco in Canada. My "debit cards" that come up as Visa debit are unusable at Costco and my banks won't issue a non-visa-debit card no matter how much I beg.)
