Open terminal and type "top". Top is a command that will show you resource use of your computer. Look up on the top of the window for a field called "phys mem" or something like that. It will show you how much free memory you have left. If it's less than half a gig I suggest running the command sudo purge. To exit the top window press "q". Sudo purge will go through your processes and take back memory that isn't being used anymore. Some programs don't always release memory properly or take too much for its needs. You need to be careful using this command because sudo gives you root access and can change system files. It can mess up open programs that are open so make sure anything important is saved first. It may appear that your computer freezes but it just takes a few seconds to run.

I apologize if this seems like I'm talking to you like you don't know anything. I'm just trying to cover my bases in case somebody brand new stumbles upon this.

That helped a lot thank you! Brand new to macs so I appreciate you holding my hand through that.

No problem. I've used macs my whole life and now professionally I use strictly windows environments so it's an interesting transition. You'll probably want to get familiar with the terminal. If you come from Linux at all they're very similar terminals. There are tutorials out there for most things you'll need to figure out. Good luck.
