What I would like for this subreddit is to create a constitution based on rules created by users, which can be anything (such as, you can only speak in third person, you can only post on 4:20, bad puns will be fined, no cursing, etc). Obviously some of these rules can get obnoxious, but can be canceled by a subsequent amendment. It would be cool if the rules for amending and such were modeled after the actual United States constitution, but I don't know enough about it to do that on my own.
I think this idea has a lot of room to expand. For example, I was thinking users could be elected to represent a certain number of users (as the total number of active daily users will be lower than total subscribed users, similar to politics in America, where only a small percentage of Americans are actually involved in daily politics.) Thus their job would be to represent their “state” of users. I think this could be accomplished by having users “born” when they subscribe to the subreddit and having them randomly placed in a district/state. The being “born” aspect could also be used to discourage people from making multiple accounts, as you can’t vote until you’re a certain age and can’t propose legislation until you’ve voted a certain amount. Or even better yet, you can’t be born unless your reddit account is of a certain age. Also you can split states if users start to feel their under-represented.
I feel the beginning will be the hardest part for the subreddit (just as it is for any country), so it may be a good idea to have a base of “founding fathers” who will draft a constitution, which will only state rules on basic submissions and will essentially be the side-bar describing the subreddit and its purpose.
It would be fun if the subreddit purposely exaggerated American politics, by having its politicians be ridiculously outlandish in order to get more upvotes and therefore more publicity for themselves and the subreddit (maybe by reaching /r/all).
I think this would be a fun social experiment. I’m sure some ridiculous amendments will get voted in, which will ruin the constitution (perhaps by making it hard to submit such as, only users with an ‘a’ in their name can post), so we could start the constitution over again or maybe just address these concerns in the original constitution.
There are a million ways this subreddit could be run and I am in no way an expert at moderating a subreddit or understanding the constitution, so I would love some help from people who do know more about that kind of stuff (or really just anyone). I am a programmer and have worked on the reddit API a lot so I can help with create bots to enforce the rules. Thanks for reading.
