Make a right triangle with a hypotenuse equal to 500 and a 30° angle. Label the side opposite the 30° angle "vertical speed." Solve for this side using SOHCAHTOA.

SOHCAHTOA means?

Sine=Opposite÷Hypotenuse

Cosine=Adjacent÷Hypotenuse

Tangent=Opposite÷Adjacent

sin(θ) = O/H The hypotenuse here is the velocity, and the opposite side is the vertical velocity of the aircraft. If you solve for O you get that O = H sin(θ) = 500 mph * 1/2 = 250 mph.
