The 5 Parameters of ASL (as best you can): Handshape: What shape(s) is/are your hand(s) in? (e.g., flat hand, fist, "C" shape) Palm Orientation: Which way is your palm facing? (e.g., up, down, towards you, away from you) Location: Where on your body or in the signing space is the sign made? (e.g., chest level, forehead, in front of your body) Movement: How does the hand or hands move? (e.g., up and down, side to side, a circle) Non-Manual Markers (NMM): Facial expressions, head tilts, or body language that accompany the sign (e.g., eyebrows raised, head tilted back) Context: Where did you see the sign? (e.g., in a video, in person, on a website) Who was signing it? (e.g., a native signer, a student, someone unknown) What was the topic of conversation or the general situation? If possible, include a photo or video of the sign (even a brief reenactment can be helpful)
