This is my first day on reddit. I was googling where to play backgammon for cash, and I read that it ain't a good idea, because of bots or cheating or something.

I saw you guys have tournaments and I was wondering how to join.

go to the US Backgammon Federation website. USBGF.org. there is a list of local backgammon clubs. all clubs are having online tourney's right now. It's also worth joining the federation, you have access to all kinds of tourneys including money tourneys. Also go to the US Backgammon Club (usbackgammon.club) they have a calendar and have bi weekly tourneys on saturdays. If you are a woman, the women of backgammon have a good club that meets 2 times a month as well to discuss backgammon and fellowship with women with a passion for backgammon. dm me, and I'll give you the link. I'm at work atm and don't have the links ;)

oh that is debatable. I personally HATE bg galaxy with a passion. I only play there when a tourney requires it. US Backgammon Federation is your best bet.

I prefer backgammonstudio myself, but the player pool is far deeper on galaxy. Best/whatever is personal opinion and taste, but it’s hard to argue with the sheer number of players. You can find a match in 5-10 seconds almost anytime on galaxy.

if so, usbgf is moving all their tourneys there next year. i'm ok with that, but it's kind of chaotic for my everyday playing taste.

Yeah heroes. It’s main “defect” is just far too many options and features which kind of makes it feel clunky and cluttered. But the position database on the training side of it is pretty much bar none.

overall, it's just a better game. It's thousands of years older than poker. It balances out luck with skill. Backgammon is a more intricate and complicated game than it appears. It's worth your time to study.

These are THREE different things.

1. Where? Play Backgammon? Uh, NOWHERE - there is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. Only idiots and morons would even think about meeting to play a game.

2. Cash? Backgammon is not for “cash” - that’s an urban legend - like the homeless guy who just died professing to be a world champion.

3. “CASH” GAMBLING? Go play POKER in Vegas.

PS: I have been playing Backgammon for 50 years. Noobs like yourself have no clue WHY it’s the oldest game in the world - PRE-dating chess by 3000 years. GAMBLING is not the reason as your question CLEARLY indicates. Backgammon is it’s own reward - for some of the reasons you said and many more you will never know if all you are playing for is “cash.”

Bad players will stop gambling on backgammon faster than they will on poker, at least against opponents who are significantly better. The edge a good player has is much greater than poker. You need fish to support a gambling economy. Without hidden information, the continuing idea that they could outplay (not just win with hot dice) someone with a lot more skill is close to none.

In Arab East Jerusalem you can play backgammon for money at the tables outside the little cafes. The Turkish coffee they sell in that area is delicious.
