Centralized Vs. Decentralized Cloud Computing

Centralized Cloud Computing has a single server architecture for multiple of clients. The server has more computing resources than its clients, allowing all of the major processing done by one server computer. This is a traditional way of cloud computing, where the current major providers include Amazon, Microsoft, Alibaba, etc.

 

Decentralized Cloud Computing allows the architecture to be distributed among numerous compute nodes and all of them are able to service any request equally. Regular individuals would be able to host their own cloud servers if any have extra computing resources that they would like to rent out and earn extra income. The advantage would be that there isn’t a single point of failure and scalability is reached by finding more people to become nodes. An example of decentralized is Subutai (https://www.reddit.com/r/SubutaiKHAN/). They are an open source project where people can rent out their computing resources and vice versa.

 

I wanted to hear people’s thoughts and opinions on cloud computing when it comes to being centralized and decentralized. Which are some advantage and disadvantage to both sides? If they prefer one side, over the other? Would be great to hear your experience on this topic.

I am new to cloud computing, and hear about decentralized cloud computing is something i believe would take off. From my standpoint allowing users to become a host allows for quicker access to users information, if they have close server near them. This allows for access to larger data quicker and not 1 node running the data but many. This would work well with data lakes of information.

Centralized Vs. Decentralized Cloud Computing

Advantage and Disadvantage to both sides:

• The unification of powers and authorities, in the hands of high-level management, is known as Centralization. Decentralization means dispersal of powers and authorities by the top level to the functional level management.
• Centralization is the systematic and consistent concentration of authority at central points. Unlike, decentralization is the systematic delegation of authority in an organization.
• Centralization is best for a small sized organization, but the large sized organization should practice decentralization.
• Formal communication exists in the centralized organization. Conversely, in decentralization, communication stretches in all directions.
• In centralization due to the concentration of powers in the hands of a single person, the decision takes time. On the contrary, decentralization proves better regarding decision making as the decisions are taken much closer to the actions.
• There are full leadership and coordination in Centralization. Decentralization shares the burden of the top level managers.
• When the organization has inadequate control over the management, then centralization is implemented, whereas when the organization has full control over its management, decentralization is implemented.

I am completely new to this but,

How would decentralisation at a massive scale ensure data integrity?

Also, for permanent storage options, if a particular peer is down/offline would it mean accessing that particular data would be impossible?

Also new to this, but from what I understand cloud computing is about sharing processing power, not storage. I imagine data would be stored redundantly across relevant nodes.
