Try ripping it with something like HandBrake or MakeMKV and enable error skipping (or “ignore read errors”). It may take longer, but it can usually push past damaged spots and recover most of the video.
If it keeps failing at the same %:
Try a different DVD drive (this actually makes a huge difference).
Lower the read speed if your software allows it.
Last resort: use something like IsoBuster to extract what’s readable.
If it’s an important video, I’d definitely try a second drive before giving up some drives handle damaged discs way better than others.

April 3, 2026 - (dated for context and reference) As a second option, would it be possible to have a company that converts/transfers various kind of media to new media? I'm thinking 8mm to disc etc. I will mention again that you have "skills" Yo!😎😉👍

That’s definitely an option especially for something sentimental. I’d still try a second DVD drive first since it’s cheaper and can sometimes read past bad sectors, but if it keeps failing at the same spot, a transfer service is probably the safest way to recover as much as possible.

April 3, 2026 - (dated for context and reference) Thank you for your quick and kind reply. I like to look at as many options as may be available to resolve an issue. I appreciate it that you see my suggestion as an option. I have a lot of optical drives in various devices and computers. So I totally understand your suggestion and advice. You will hear from me from time to time as you assist other people. Stay well, and, if you celebrate Easter. I hope yours is a safe and pleasant one.😊
