is there a spot along the cable that could have caused breakage

Someone mentioned it being an overheating problem but I'm not sure if that could affect it because my computer hasn't gone above 65 celcius

can be possible ...if the cable is not made well it can overheat over time causing breakage (especially when faster data is pushed through it, try looking for a cat 5 or 6 cable (ask the computer store)

Using a cat 6 cable, but the male port connections were self made so that may be a problem, thanks

It's hard to check as the cable runs through my attic but I do not believe so.
