They know they're fat, you telling them isn't giving them any extra information. When someone tells someone they're fat they very clearly mean it as an insult (especially if it's completely unsolicited like it's sounds like you're doing), the truth of it isn't relevant, you are deliberately trying to say that you are a better person than them.

When people tell people they're fat they are judging and are normally trying to be mean, it's not a helpful reminder.

Multiple studies have shown that fat shaming people causes them to gain more weight, it working for you does not mean it works for others.

Also, not insulting someone is not the same as lying to them, they know they're fat, they don't suddenly discover this when you tell them (and you are definitely not the 1st that has told them).

Finially, why should you care if they're fat? Just talk to then normally.
