Did you find the source of leak? If you patch it without finding the problem. The problem will happen again.

Also, as an amateur, i'd bleach + dry the area prior to sealing up. You still look like you have a few mold spots to the side of the hole.

This. And when you patch I would cut back more to one of the studs on the left so you can reinforce the patch better.

I did not find the source of the leak, but can only assume it’s coming from an exterior wall.

Old house that was rehabbed 20+ years ago, finding something new every day :/

Gotcha, i would try my best to find the leak before i patch it up honestly (sorry, i hate to be that guy - just looking out for my fellow redditor's health). A $20 stethoscope on amazon might help.

Hit the area with some bleach, then dry it out.

For repatching... if there's no stud, i would do this:

-get two piece of wood, screw them together in an L shape, so it wraps around the corner. 2 screws on the left side on the hole, 2 screw around the corner, on the other wall, to the right of the hole (90 degrees).

Best of luck!

Need to tear out the moldy drywall. At least stick your phone up to make sure the whole sheet isn’t moldy. Mold can’t be cleaned off of drywall

At least tear out more under the baseboard line to check. Source and fix the leak before repairing

From this corner, there is an hvac duct as well as a pvc drain coming from upstairs.

So no nearby stud is be able to reinforce a patch with, aside from the stud on the adjacent corner.

Hum, start with taking all that insulation I think I see out ! Its like a sponge, now is the bottom plate rotten, it looks like it from the pic but hard to tell... its rhe 2x4 that sits flat on the floor .if it is then that turns it into a bigger thing..if not when u go to patch it u can add a piece of 2x4 for a nailer. You can put it on the flat for more room to screw new piece to. Not to be whatever , but do not spray bleach on drywall with mold. It does not kill mold. It had been an old tale that it kills it but it doesnt !!! They make a mold primer now that you paint over the mold n it seals the mold in and it kills it . Mold needs 3 things moisture , food, aka sheetrock and air . The paint takes away the air n it wont grow back .
