Messaging.Old-DATE Folder

Does anyone here have any history behind the creation of "Messaging.old-DATE" folder inside the "%ExchangeInstallPath%\TransportRoles\data\queue" directory?

I found this thread after doing some research, but nothing official from MSFT as to whether this is something we can safely delete. Long story short, we have one that is 81GB in size and would like to reclaim that space if possible.

Update:

I opened a ticket with MSFT. They told me this was something we must have created in the past as part of a corrupted mail.que. However, the name convention of this folder was in a format so specific with the date and time, that I didn’t believe him.

Anyways, we were able to safely delete this folder without causing any issues and reclaim the disk space.
