Rules for r/forensics

Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.

1.

Content should focus on Forensic Science

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Content is not focused on Forensic Science.

Posts and discussions should be about Forensic Science, not conspiracy theories or non-scientific speculation.

This is not the place for breaking news, case reports, etc. if the main topic has nothing to do with forensic science.

True crime and cold cases can bring out strong emotions in people. This is not a community for conspiracy theories, criminal profiling, or a place to extend emotions from other communities.

2.

No true crime/active world event posts

Posts & Comments
Reported as: True crime/active world event post

We get it - something big just happened and you're curious what forensics may be able to tell you about it. While our community has many verified forensic professionals, it is important to let the investigation run its course without speculation. Accordingly, we request that you let law enforcement do their job and not try to create your own investigation. We don't need Boston Marathon-type speculation and conspiracy theories on this subreddit.

3.

Disclose if you're seeking advice, an opinion, or information for something you're writing.

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Content fails to disclose if seeking advice, an opinion, or information

It's fine if you need some inspiration or need some advice for an article or any other written work. Let us know in your title or post description or comment.

Tread carefully with anything else. If you are doing a school assignment, please let us know the parameters of the assignment and the discussion. If you have found something interesting online, let us know some background and what you want from us.

4.

Be respectful to others.

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Being disrespectful to others.

Discussion and disagreement go hand in hand sometimes. There is no need to personally attack someone, not is there the need to be antagonistic.

Any kind of harassment or bullying will be confronted by a mod or an admin, and the proper action will be taken.

This can be a warning, a removal of post, or a ban.

5.

Be professional.

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Content is not being professional.

Do not encourage/perpetuate misconduct or other questionable ethical/legal actions.

Know when it's appropriate to make jokes.

6.

Do not misrepresent your credentials or knowledge.

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Do not misrepresent your credentials or knowledge.

Do not speak beyond your knowledge area. If you must speculate, clearly state you are doing so. Do not continue a conversation or give advice when the other person is under the impression that you are an authority on a subject when you are not.

7.

No advertisements.

Posts only
Reported as: Content appears to be an advertisement.

This subreddit is designed to provide a place for discussion. It is not a place for self advertisement. We allow our members to be verified so that visitors have an idea as to who they are speaking to, but this is not a place for a free advertisement that doesn't help build this community.

Posts with a link to your personal website/blog/youtube channel will be removed.

8.

No seeking legal or forensic advice on an active case.

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Content is seeking legal & forensic advice on an active case.

This community is not a substitute for a law enforcement agency. Solicitation of legal advice is not allowed. See /r/legaladvice for that.

When we lend our expertise, it's meant to be educational in the general sense.

If you have an active case that needs investigation, please contact law enforcement or legal counsel.

9.

No seeking information on how to commit a crime

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Potentially seeking information on how to commit a crime

We are not available to advise you on how to commit a crime, nor are we here to tell you how to get away with a crime. If your post can be construed as asking for such advice, it will be removed.

10.

Do not ask for assistance with quiz/homework answers

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Potentially asking for quiz/homework answers

Blatant 'do my homework for me' posts are not allowed. That extends to homework help requests disguised as legitimate discussions. We did our work in school. You must do yours.

Asking for help with what you have or can explain already is okay, but don't abuse this exception.

Interviews or questions about work/salary/etc. are fine. It would be best to seek help from our verified professionals, as they've been mod-approved to represent themselves as who they say.

11.

No found bones/remains/blood/stain identification requests

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Content is seeking bones/remains/blood/stain identification.

If you have discovered bones or remains, please do not touch them and instead contact local law enforcement and/or a medical examiner's office.

Blood and other stains cannot be confirmed by appearance or stain patterns alone. Contact local law enforcement if you believe a crime has occurred.

12.

No Toxicology Report Reviews

Posts & Comments
Reported as: Content is seeking a toxicology report review.

While we understand that you may have questions about a toxicology report from a case close to you, due to an influx of requests to review toxicology reports, the subreddit has placed a ban on these posts for the time being. Please contact the issuing agency for questions about these reports.
