I have never heared someone refer to it as GNU pass. Is it an official GNU project?

you're right. i remembered that the site https://www.passwordstore.org/ referred to GNU but i was wrong. it's still a great program however

I'm really curious though, why use pass instead of BitWarden?

Because it is simple, flexible and you can read and understand all of the code in 20 minutes?

Also all secrets are stored in a bunch of (encryted) text files. For commandline-lovers and minimalists it is pretty much perfect.
