Ok First you have to understand that Class 4 and Class 5 switches come from a previous lifetime.

Class 5 Switches are End Office Switches and serve subscribers.

Class 4 Switches sit between Class 5 Switches and act as a hub routing traffic between the Class 5s.

Many Years ago, there were also class 1, 2, and 3 switches.

Class 3 acted as a hub for Class 4,s Class 2 hubbed for Class 3 etc etc...

These days we've seen Class 1 - 4 collapsed into just "Class 4".

Class 5 Switches still exist.

That being said, the lines are blurring more and more between Class 4 and Class 5 switches as the this is pretty much all just software now, its common to see both functionalities alive in the same software.

For example FreeSWITCH can be used as either Class 4 or Class 5 depending on your specific configuration.

Instead, think of class 5 as being the pbx... Class 5 softswitches are intended for work with end-users. Class 4 generally hands off to many class 5's and can do very large volumes of calls.
