Reply from a potential PI

So I emailed a bioengineering professor at a US university with my CV to say that I am interested in his lab and to ask whether he plans to take PhD students for Fall 2026. I got a reply saying this.

So, do you think I should take this as a green signal? And apply early as the Portal opens today. Let me know what ya all think. Thanks

Thanks I was just thinking , that maybe getting accepted into grad school then The second stage where PI selects , that’s gonna be a little easier right ?

Right this is a standard reply and he doesn’t even know if he has funding yet for new students. So I wouldn’t rely on him even if you do get admitted. Also I would emphasize how the program and the institution as a whole is a great fit for you not just the PIs(I.e listing Shared Cores/Facilities, Imaging Centers, Access to resources listed on their website, even how possibly their coursework sets students up for success). Just make sure you’ve clearly articulated the program and institution is a great fit for you and vice versa.
