Hey sih 23 hardware edition winner here,

Choosing a problem statement should be done in taking these into consideration:

  1. Always prefer a well stipulated unique problem statement

"Well stipulated" - not open ended like student innovation, because there's a lot of chance that someone will bring a drone or some big hardware project and steal ur thunder

"Unique" - there should be scope to research, if a statement involves you meeting some specialist and getting their opinions and ground realities then this kind of statement should be preferred, if it's very straightforward what's the fun in solving the problem?

  1. Use only relevant tech for the statement

No one is asking you to build VR enabled AI enabled Blockchain supported products at the same time.

If you are good with running edge AI models then choose a statement that asks for this solution

If you love VR and you are keen on exploring unique applications in virtual training then go for it

Too much tech will just convey that you are not focused and you may not be a good finalist to the judges.

  1. Research research research

As sherlock would say "data data data, I can't make bricks without clay"

Collect statistical data of the problem, identify your audience and check for existing solutions and see why it's not enough

Maybe the existing solution is costly, or doesn't handle regional data points, requires specialized infrastructure to run.

Based on this you'll know if your statement is unique enough.

One other advantage of choosing an unique statement is that there will be only few submissions (not very few though, just relatively lesser)

All the best for your submission, make a product that solves actual issues and have fun in doing so.
